Inside the hollow of one of the cut tree trunks, the workers found four tiny baby squirrels — almost blind, helpless, and terrified. The little ones pressed against each other, trying to stay warm, but their mother never appeared among the fallen branches.
Every minute mattered. The freezing babies were quickly taken to a nearby animal shelter. But the staff knew the truth: raising such tiny wild animals by hand was extremely difficult, almost hopeless.
Then one of the shelter workers had a risky idea. In the next enclosure lived a cat named Maya, who had recently given birth and was nursing her own kittens.

The decision was dangerous. Placing wild rodents beside a cat meant going against her natural instincts. To her, a squirrel could easily be prey. The shelter workers held their breath as they carefully placed the baby squirrels near Maya and watched her reaction.
The tiny bodies barely moved. Their eyes had only just begun to open, and without a mother’s warmth, they had almost no chance of survival. Everyone understood that only a miracle could save them now.
The shelter fell into tense silence. There was no time for hesitation. The volunteers had to make a brave choice — and that choice was Maya, the mother cat who was already caring for her own newborns.
