The stallion thundered across the meadow and plunged into the river without slowing down.
The icy current struck its chest, but the horse forced its way deeper, following the floating teddy bear that had surfaced several meters downstream. On the riverbank, a fisherman dropped his net and began shouting for help.
For several agonizing seconds, there was no sign of the girl.
Then one of her hands broke through the surface.
The stallion reached her just as the current began pulling her toward a line of sharp rocks. It lowered its body in the water, allowing the terrified child to grasp its mane. Although her legs were weak, she wrapped both arms around its neck and held on.
The horse turned toward the shore.
Each step was a battle. The river pushed against them, and twice the girl nearly slipped away. But the stallion refused to stop. With the fisherman guiding it from the bank, it finally dragged the child into shallow water.
She was unconscious but still breathing.
As the fisherman carried her onto the grass, the man in the boat tried to escape. He rowed furiously toward the opposite shore, but police officers arrived before he could reach it.
The truth emerged at the hospital.
The girl’s mother had died two years earlier, leaving her daughter a large inheritance that her father could not access while the child was alive. He had planned to make her death appear accidental, believing her disability would prevent her from surviving the river.
But he had forgotten about the horse.
The chestnut stallion belonged to the girl’s late mother. Before her death, she had often placed her daughter on his back during therapy sessions. The animal had recognized the child’s voice, her scent, and even the teddy bear she always carried.
The father was arrested and later sentenced to prison.
The girl survived, although her recovery took many months. She moved in with her grandmother, who brought the stallion to a small farm near their home.
Every afternoon, the girl sat beside him and brushed his chestnut coat.
