LIFE STORIES

My husband had the names of ten different women tattooed on his back, and I was convinced he’d gotten them out of foolishness and immaturity in his youth. But it wasn’t until after twenty years of marriage that I discovered the horrible truth about him, and I was completely shocked.

For many years, I believed these tattoos were a youthful indiscretion. It wasn’t until twenty years into our marriage that I discovered a terrifying truth and realized that I had spent all that time with a man I didn’t know at all.

When I married Mark, I was only twenty-five. I was a discreet and very naive young woman who loved him so much that she was willing to turn a blind eye to almost anything.

I first saw those names on our honeymoon. They were tattooed in dark letters, perfectly aligned along his spine: Natalie, Rebecca, Julia, Monica, Allison, Kate, Emily, Sarah, Danielle, and Rose.

I stared at them for a long time before cautiously asking,

“Mark, who are all these women?”

He immediately tensed, pulled on his T-shirt, and turned away from me.

“That’s old nonsense,” he replied curtly. “I was young and did strange things.”

I tried to smile and joke.

“You dated all of them?”

Mark gave me such a cold look that I felt chills.

“Don’t ask me about my past. It has nothing to do with our family.”

His reaction hurt me deeply, but I didn’t want to ruin the first days of our marriage. I convinced myself that everyone has secrets they’d rather forget.

A few weeks later, I brought up those names again. This time, Mark didn’t even try to explain.

“I can’t talk about it,” he said.

“Sorry… I just wanted to understand…”

He turned sharply toward me.

“Don’t ever mention those women to me again.”

After that, I never brought it up again. Years passed, we bought a house, built a peaceful life, and shared friends and routines. Mark was a caring husband. He never raised his voice at me and was always on time. Gradually, I almost stopped noticing the tattoo.

Everything changed a few months before our twentieth wedding anniversary.

Mark started acting strangely. He was coming home later and later from work, something he never used to do. He always propped his phone screen against the table, and as soon as I entered a room, he quickly closed his conversations. Some nights, he would get up, go into the kitchen, and discreetly exchange messages with someone.

For a long time, I thought the problem was me. Maybe I was getting older. Maybe I wasn’t as attractive as I used to be. Then I started to think that Mark might have a mistress, or even a second family.

One evening, he told me he was leaving for a business meeting. I waited until his car disappeared around the corner, then I got in mine and followed him.

But what I discovered was far worse than just a mistress. All this time, my husband had been pretending to be someone else.

Mark stopped in front of a small restaurant on the outskirts of town. A few minutes later, a young woman wearing a red coat approached him. He smiled at her, opened the car door for her, and then they drove off together.

My hands began to tremble. I was convinced I had finally found his mistress.

I followed them for a while longer and noticed that Mark wasn’t heading towards a hotel or a house. He left the city and went to an old, abandoned warehouse.

I parked a little further away and walked over. Through a broken window, I saw the young woman in the middle of the building. She was looking at Mark anxiously.

“You told me we were going to a restaurant,” she said. “Why did we come here?”

Without answering, Mark locked the door.

At that moment, I remembered the ten names tattooed on his back, and for the first time, I felt real terror.

I took out my phone and called the police, then continued watching through the window. Mark opened an old metal cabinet. Inside, I saw handbags, jewelry, and photographs of women. Each photograph featured one of the women whose name was tattooed on her back.

When the police arrived, Mark tried to flee, but he was arrested right in front of the warehouse.

Later, the investigator revealed the whole truth to me. Before we met, Mark would seduce women, invite them on dates, and then kill them. After we got married, he stopped for twenty years, but he had recently started looking for victims again on dating sites.

The names tattooed on his back weren’t mementos of former partners. They were a list of the women he had killed.

I lived by his side for twenty years, falling asleep next to him every night without having the slightest idea who he really was. The most frightening thing wasn’t that he had hidden his past, but that he had managed, all that time, to appear as a perfectly ordinary man.
